FAQ

Streaks, getting fired, probation, passes and the Dealer Rating.

About

What is The Daily Lowball?

The Daily Lowball is a daily used car price guessing game at dailylowball.com. Every day there are 5 real used cars in Guess the Price, where you guess what each one sold for, and 5 in Steal or Bad Deal, where you see what it sold for and call it a steal or a bad deal. Higher or Lower has no daily limit.

It's an independent site, not made by or affiliated with Bring a Trailer, Hagerty or any other car company.

The job

What does "Day 4 on the job" mean?

In both daily games you work at a used car lot. Your boss shows you 5 cars a day, and your streak counts the days in a row you kept your job.

Guess the Price shows it as "Day 4 on the job". Steal or Bad Deal shows it as "4 good days in a row". Each game has its own streak.

What gets me fired?

Guess the Price: an F day, meaning your 5 cars average below 35 points (under 175 out of 500).

Steal or Bad Deal: all 5 calls wrong.

Getting fired resets your streak. You start again at day 1 the next day.

What is probation?

A shaky day puts you on probation, and the next day your boss expects more. In Guess the Price, a D day (175 to 274 points) puts you on probation, and the next day you need a C or better (275 points) to keep your job.

In Steal or Bad Deal, getting just 1 right puts you on probation, and the next day you need at least 2 right.

Hit the higher bar and you're off probation. Miss it and you're fired, unless you have a pass.

What is a pass?

A great day earns a pass, a good word from the boss: an A day in Guess the Price (425 points or more), or all 5 right in Steal or Bad Deal.

A pass saves you from one firing. That day still counts toward your streak, but you're on probation the next day.

You can hold one pass per game at a time. The header shows "1 pass" while you have it.

What happens if I miss a day?

Your streak starts over, and any probation is cleared. A pass doesn't cover a missed day, but you keep it for later.

What if I don't finish a day?

In Guess the Price, any car you didn't guess counts as 0 points, so quitting early usually gets you fired.

In Steal or Bad Deal, an unfinished day counts as a missed day.

What if the new day starts while I'm playing?

New cars drop every day at 8 PM ET. If you opened a game before then, you can still finish it, and it counts toward your Dealer Rating.

But a day finished after the next one has started doesn't count toward your streak, so your streak starts over. Wordle works the same way.

Scoring

How are Guess the Price points worked out?

Each car is worth up to 100 points. The closer your guess, the more you get, and guessing too high costs the same as guessing too low by the same factor: double the price scores the same as half of it.

You get 0 once you're 4 times off, either way.

What do the letter grades mean?

Each car gets a grade from its points: A is 85 or more, B is 70 or more, C is 55 or more, D is 35 or more, and anything lower is an F.

Your day's grade is the average of your 5 cars. That day grade is what decides firing, probation and passes.

A car that sold for $30,000
You guess $32,000A95 points
You guess $45,000B71 points
You guess $60,000D50 points
You guess $120,000F0 points

How does Steal or Bad Deal decide if I'm right?

Each car is checked against what similar cars sold for: the same make and model, within 3 model years. If it sold for less than the typical price, it was a Steal. At or above it, it was a Bad Deal.

The bar showing how everyone else called it is just for fun. It doesn't decide your score.

How does Higher or Lower work?

It's an endless chain of real sales: say whether the next car sold for more or less than the one before. You have 3 lives. A wrong call costs one, and every 10 right calls win one back, up to 3.

Play as much as you like. Your first 5 runs each day count toward your Dealer Rating.

How does Lucky License Plate work?

You get one random US license plate a day. Each state comes up as often as its plates do on US roads, going by the 2023 federal count of registered cars and trucks, so a California plate is about 1 in 9 and a Wyoming plate about 1 in 318. The letters and numbers follow that state's real plate format.

Patterns on the plate earn badges, like 777, a 350 small block or a model year, and a rarer badge is worth more. Your plate's tier and its "1 in" odds come from comparing its total with 20 million practice rolls.

It's pure luck, so it doesn't count toward your Dealer Rating.

Are these real sales?

Yes. Most cars sold on BaT (Bring a Trailer), an online car auction site. Prices are the final sale price in US dollars. The cars, photos, prices and descriptions are real, not made by AI.

Can I send in my own sale?

Yes, if it sold in the US in the last year. Send it from the Submit a sale page with photos and proof of the price, like a bill of sale. We check every one by hand, and accepted cars show where they sold, like "Sold May 15, 2026 in Texas". Dealerships: please don't use that form. Message us on Instagram instead (see the For dealerships page), and featured dealers get their name on their cars, marked "Featured dealer".

Dealer Rating

What is the Dealer Rating?

One score across every game for how well you know what cars are worth. Everyone starts at 1000.

Each rated game moves it up when you do better than expected for your current Dealer Rating and down when you do worse, so it measures skill, not just time played. Guess the Price is gentler: each car counts on its own, and drops count half.

An experience bonus also grows as you play, up to 100 points. You appear on the leaderboard after 5 rated games.

Can't people just look up the price?

They can try, but it shows. Guesses that land on the real price far more often than luck allows keep a player off the leaderboard. Taking your time with the photos is fine: there's no timer, and a good eye won't trip it.

What does "Top 22%" mean?

Under a finished game, "Today's Guess the Price: Top 22%" compares your score with everyone who played that game today. Your overall rank is your Dealer Rating, all games combined.

Days, the archive and accounts

Can I play past days?

Yes, every past day is in the archive. Archive games don't count toward your Dealer Rating or your streaks.

A day you played live shows your real result. If you left cars unguessed that day, you can finish them in the archive, just for fun.

Do I need an account?

No. As a guest, your results are saved in this browser. Make an account to keep your Dealer Rating and streaks on any device. Your guest history moves over when you sign up or log in.
